Teaching English at Home When You Studied in Hindi Medium

A lot of mothers say some version of the same sentence. “My child goes to an English medium school, but I studied in Hindi medium, so how can I help?” There is often a bit of embarrassment behind it, as if their own schooling disqualifies them.
It does not. Teaching English at home to a young child is less about your own fluency and more about a few clear methods, patience and daily time together. Many parents who studied in Hindi medium turn out to be excellent home teachers once they have the right tools.
Your Hindi is an advantage, not a problem
Think about how you explain anything to your child. You use the language you both think in. When you explain English sounds and words in Hindi, your child understands the idea first, and then practises it in English. That is how most people learn a second language well.
Phonics in Hindi works on this principle. The explanation is in Hindi. The sounds, words and reading are in English. Your child gets the best of both.
You do not need perfect pronunciation
Many parents worry that their accent will “spoil” their child’s English. Children hear English from many sources, including school, cartoons and friends, and they adapt quickly. What matters more is that you say the basic letter sounds correctly and consistently.
Those sounds are a small, learnable set. A parent who spends a few weeks learning them properly will be able to teach early reading with confidence, regardless of how fluent they feel in conversation.
Ask for help without guilt
Learning a method designed for parents can save months of guesswork. A good phonics course for mothers teaches you the sounds, the order and the games, so you are never left wondering what to do next.
Hindi medium parents and English learning at home are not a contradiction. They are a very common combination, and it works.

A simple first month plan
If you are not sure where to begin, try this for the first four weeks. In week one, learn six letter sounds yourself and teach them to your child through games. In week two, practise blending those sounds into simple words like “sat,” “pin” and “tap.” In week three, add a few more sounds and read tiny sentences together. In week four, pick a very simple English picture book and read it together every night.
Keep each session to ten minutes. Write down what your child learned each day in a small notebook. By the end of the month, both of you will be surprised by how much has been covered.

Start with sounds, not grammar
There is a temptation to teach English the way many of us were taught, with grammar rules, tenses and long word lists. For a child under seven, this is the wrong starting point.
Start instead with letter sounds and simple reading. Once a child can read short words and sentences, vocabulary and grammar build naturally through books, conversation and school. English for kids at home should feel like play, not like an exam.
Use English in small daily moments
You do not need to switch the whole house to English. Try adding a few English phrases into normal routines.
- “Put on your shoes.”
- “Drink your milk.”
- “Where is the red ball?”
- “Time to sleep.”
Keep it light and repeat the same phrases daily. Children pick them up fast, and you will find your own confidence growing too.
Read together, even if you read slowly
Pick very simple picture books. Read slowly, point to each word, and talk about the pictures in Hindi or English, whichever comes naturally. If you are unsure of a word, it is fine to say so and look it up together. Your child learns that not knowing is normal and finding out is part of reading.
Plenty of parents find their own English gets a little stronger alongside their child’s. That is a happy side effect.
